A big problem that you will often run into when trying to select corporate gifts for someone is that you just don't know them that well. The ideal corporate gift will say something about your relationship - it signals to the person that you know about them and value their friendship. However, in many situations you will be giving something to someone who you just don't have that good of a relationship with - yet. A corporate gift basket can show someone that you'd like to have a business relationship with them in the future, even if you don't have one at the moment. It's got a lot of benefits for the situation in which you're unsure of exactly what the recipient of the gift would enjoy.

The best part about a corporate gift basket is that it can contain a wide variety of different gifts. This is a huge advantage - it's very hard to gauge whether a person who you aren't that close to is going to like a gift. A pen or a crystal statue may just be a throwaway gift, and the person may not care about it. Other gifts could be even worse - my favorite example of this is a guy who gave fancy chocolates to a diabetic. A gift basket avoids this problem with diversification - you know that even if there's one thing in there that the person doesn't like or has some problem with, they'll find something else that they do like. It also has the benefit that they're more likely to talk about it (and by extension, you) with their spouses - a key and often overlooked aspect of corporate success. Many people's interactions with you will be influenced just as much by how their spouse feels about you as by how they do - get in good with them, and you've clinched the contact. With a corporate gift basket, their spouse is sure to rummage through it as well, meaning that they'll see exactly who gave them the gift.
