So you've decided to get someone a corporate gift. That's the easy part. What do you actually give them? There is such a broad array of different gifts that you could be giving someone that coming up with a corporate gift idea is often extremely difficult. You'll need to break down your decision into steps, which will make it much easier. First, figure out who your targets are and what their characteristics and desires are. Second, come up with a list of potential gift ideas so that you know what you can choose from. Third, think over each item on the list and what its costs and benefits will be.

Step One - Who are you targeting with your gift?
This makes a big difference in your ultimate decision. People give corporate gifts for a number of reasons, and this results in them being given to different people. Sometimes it's a single person - your boss, a coworker, or a key client. If this is the case, then the rule should always be that personalized is better - give a gift that they will 1) like and enjoy 2) use often and 3) that says something about your relationship. If it's a single person, then you should try to figure out what you know about their interests. If they have any hobbies, favorite sports, etc., you can come up with a unique, specialized gift for them that they will enjoy. If you're giving a gift to multiple people (i.e., potential or present customers), then your corporate gift idea will have to be something different. You probably won't be able to personalize it - so go with something that is generally useful and enjoyable regardless of a person's interests. The value should correspond to the value of your customers or target audience. If your relationship is worth millions in sales, then a keychain won't cut it. On the other hand, if it's just a potential client worth a few hundred if there's a sale, then some cheap item with your company's name and address on it is perfect.
Step Two - Come up with a list of gift items in your price range.
This is the hardest step for most people - coming up with what you can give people. Look around for various corporate gift idea inspirations - what gifts have you gotten yourself in past years? What is for sale generically? Give yourself a price range for the gifts, and find something in that range. If you're at the lower end, a good tip is to customize the gift with your contact information and make it something that someone will use on a daily basis - more frequent contact will remind the target of your existence.
Step Three - Weigh the Costs and Benefits
Don't give a thousand dollar gift to someone who is a minor player in your career or business. Make sure the costs are worth it - the point isn't to blow money but to generate goodwill, and that goodwill has to pay off in the end.
